The Ultimate Guide to Planning Your First Bali Villa Vacation

Bali rewards a bit of planning. The island is bigger and more varied than first-time visitors expect, and where you base yourself changes the whole shape of your trip. Here’s how to plan a first Bali villa vacation properly.

Pick your base by what you want, not just the map

Seminyak and Canggu suit travellers who want beach clubs, surf, good restaurants and a social scene within walking or scooter distance. Ubud suits anyone chasing rice terraces, temples and a slower, greener pace, with markedly cooler evenings than the coast. Uluwatu suits those who want dramatic clifftop views and world-class surf breaks, with a bit more distance to the main nightlife. Many first-time visitors split their stay across two areas rather than picking just one.

How many days you actually need

Seven days is a comfortable minimum to see two areas without rushing. Ten to fourteen days lets you add a third region, or slow down and genuinely rest at your villa rather than sightseeing every day. Given the flight time most travellers face to reach Bali, fewer than five days rarely feels worth it.

Booking your villa: what actually matters

Beyond bedroom count, check three things specifically: pool privacy (some villas share pool access with neighbouring units), staff inclusions (a private cook or daily housekeeping changes the whole experience), and distance to the beach or main strip if you’re not renting a scooter. A villa five minutes from Canggu’s main road is a very different trip from one twenty minutes out.

Getting around

Bali traffic is genuinely heavy in Canggu and Seminyak, especially by late afternoon. Many groups hire a driver for the full trip rather than relying on ride-hailing apps, which face restrictions in some areas. If your villa is in Ubud, factor in at least an hour’s drive to reach the coast.
